For us whisky lovers, being a whisky ambassador seems like a dream job. Career nirvana, you might say.
Flying, sailing, driving from port to port, seeing the world. Spreading the water of life all across our great land, meeting interesting and famous people. A toast every night with a glass of beautiful amber nectar in your hand. Like you've died and gone to heaven.
It does, however, have its share of challenges. Take for in-stance, the non-stop schedule. Flying to LA on the red eye to perform three whisky tastings that morning and one in the afternoon. You arrive at your hotel room only to shower and never to sleep because it's back on a plane to Vegas to do a tasting that night at a casino, then pass out in a dif-ferent hotel bed. You wake up in the morning and call the concierge asking what city you're in. Some ambassadors are only home to sleep in their own beds one week out of the month. With little sleep, fueled by whisky, maintaining your A-game can become quite a struggle. Always smiling, always "on", because of course you must join every bartender, liquor store salesmen, connoisseur and fan that you meet on your journey in a sip of the good old water of life.
Talk to ambassadors and they all say the same thing - although it's hectic and demanding, they wouldn't change their job for anything. Like the saying goes, it's a tough job, but someone has to do it! And these ladies and gentlemen do it, day in and day out, spreading the good word of whisky to the masses.
Recently, we tracked Ricky Crawford from The Glenlivet for two months to get a better idea of what his life on the go is like⦠and here is just a glimpse into his world.
